Worldbuilding Wednesday #1: Welcome to Varestal

“Every tale begins with a kingdom—and every kingdom is built upon blood, bone, and broken promises.”

Welcome to the first ever Worldbuilding Wednesday, a weekly passage into the lands, legends, and lives that shape the world of Varestal.

This is more than a backdrop. It’s a realm carved from the ashes of forgotten empires, held together by ancient oaths, and teetering on the edge of war. If you’ve read The Shattered Crown or The Fall of the Duke, you’ve seen only the surface. Now, we go deeper.

The Kingdom of Varestal:

A land of fractured unity, noble bloodlines, and buried secrets.

Varestal is a feudal monarchy, ruled from the capital Dravengarde by the royal House Drakemore. But power is rarely simple. The kingdom stretches across wild highlands, mist-covered forests, sun-bleached coastlines, and war-scarred plains—each controlled by powerful noble houses, many of whom remember a time when kings bowed to them.

Though the crown rules in name, alliances shift like sand, and rebellion stirs beneath the surface. Loyalty is bought, titles are won with steel, and no throne stays warm for long.

Key Regions of Varestal

Dravengarde – The Heart of the Kingdom
A city of obsidian towers and ancient power. Home to the Obsidian Throne, it is the political center of Varestal and the ancestral seat of House Drakemore. Beneath its grandeur lies a history of betrayal, war, and shadowed corridors where power is whispered more than spoken.

Kalandor – The Western Stronghold
Once a land of open fields and proud lords, Kalandor now stands as a symbol of tyranny under Duke Varian Morgrave. A militarized region, its people know order, fear, and fire. Rebellion once sparked here—burned down, but never fully extinguished.

Ironholt – The Frozen North
Highlands battered by snow and shaped by stone. Known for its blacksmithing guilds and warrior clans, Ironholt values strength and honor. Tradition runs deep here, and so do old rivalries with the southern nobles.

Whisperfen – The Forgotten East
A place of myth and mystery. It is said that the last true magic in Varestal died here—or perhaps waits, sleeping beneath moss and root. Those who wander too deep into the mists often don’t return… or return changed.

Veldenmere – The Jewel of the Coast
A neutral city of trade and diplomacy. Veldenmere bends to neither king nor duke, surviving on its wealth and ships. Secrets flow as freely here as coin, and not all wars are fought with swords.

Caer Dannon – The Southern Bastion
Near the Vassarian border lies Caer Dannon, a fortress city long guarding the realm’s edge. Its lords, House Dannon, are warriors and wardens, ever-watchful of foreign influence and internal fracture alike.

The Noble Houses

Power in Varestal is not held by one man alone. The great houses—each with their own banners, bloodlines, and ambitions—wield influence to rival the crown itself. Over the coming weeks, we’ll introduce you to:

  • House Drakemore – By flame and blood. The ruling dynasty.
  • House Morgrave – Strength through order. Cold, ruthless, calculating.
  • House Marcentis – Traders with buried magic and broken pride.
  • House Alden – Lords of the marsh, known for their quiet resilience.
  • House Veylan – A house lost to history, said to be touched by magic.

Each of these families has shaped the kingdom—and not always for the better.

What to Expect Every Wednesday:

  • Deep dives into cities, lore, and lost legends
  • Banner reveals, ancient rivalries, and shifting alliances
  • Sneak peeks into upcoming novels
  • Character spotlights and origin tales
  • Interactive posts where you help shape the world
